Traces of the Real

Both artists reflect elements of the real world in different ways:

In his new optical paintings, Amiss uses photographs as the source of his imagery, sometimes stretching them to the point of abstraction, but arresting them at a certain point, using the traditional illusionistic tricks of trompe l’oeil, to bring them back to reality, but sometimes in a surprising way, subverting the natural order of things. Constantly searching for the next beautiful idea; he works like a scientist, using mathematics, experimental analysis and classical psychophysical methods to create his spectacular optical paintings. He likes to explore and make manifest what the senses can be made to deliver, and creating what he calls a tapestry of vision.
