Traces of the Real

Colin McCallum derives his images from memories of the real world as presented in his local experience of urban living; the designs, motifs, fabrications, surfaces, textures and colours, where all these jostling images and impressions , whilst dislocated and detached from their context, become synthesized on canvas, taming their errant nature. They seem to occupy a space somewhere between the ‘blooming buzzing confusion’ (William James description of the experience of the newborn infant thrown into the world and confronted by myriads of inchoate sensations), and the mature perceptions and understanding of the adult confronted by the concrete reality of civilised culture.
