‘Happiness’ — such a hard sell in the art world, so often seen as a trite emotion. Well how about happiness with a streak of nostalgia and a hint of melancholia; add some humour and joy and I’m damned for ever. A lot of my work is based on the power that objects have to evoke memories and emotions; may it be a firework waiting to be lit, a votive offering, a treasured toy within a reliquary or a loved one.

As a child I used to buy fireworks with my pocket money, weeks before 5th November; I would line them up in my bedroom entranced. The anticipation of sparkling volcanos, rockets ascending to the heavens, fountains of colour and sound. The reality rarely lived up to the exotic patterns of the poorly printed wrappings.

Likewise toys from my childhood placed within the hand reliquaries spark many associations. These images are further enhanced by song lyrics and stream-of-consciousness Text-ures surrounding them and the monumental subjects of the figure paintings.

Some of these figures — are they turned away in rejection or perhaps, more hopefully, inviting us to step into their space and see what they see? In other works their shadows have a life of their own, let loose across the landscape, radiating lines of connection, though where to, is not revealed to us.

These rays have a double life, but to see that, you will need to turn out the lights!
