James Bland is an artist whose distinctive light-filled paintings blend memory, direct observation, and imagination. His way of working is influenced by Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Balthus, Euan Uglow, and Anselm Kiefer, as well as archaic and mediaeval art.
Grounded in rigorous draughtsmanship and close attention to the fall of light, his paintings are playful and improvisatory, an exploration of relationships between people and places and between reality and dreams.
