11th - 31st March 2003

Dido Powell’s paintings take inspiration from discrepancies in scale between objects and views and layered reflections. Unexpected abstract shapes and oddly juxtaposed objects feature within a strongly coloured bold figurative style grounded in observation. These observations are taken from vegetable life, human life (domestic interiors) and ‘hot’ landscapes; from West Africa to India to Turkey and France. Objects and people are viewed from above, below, close up and cropped, evoking a mood of the curious and the uncanny; marrying memories and the present, often prompted by a sense of longing.
