The Saints series came about when I was talking to a friend about the narrative element in my work. I wanted to explore symbolism and the issues I had of being brought up as a Roman Catholic and she suggested I look at the Saints as a subject for a new series of paintings. The works are a tapestry of research not only into the lives of just a few saints, but also the cults and superstitions that have grown around them. Using historic and Catholic sources, I paint the Saints in contemporary settings, rendering them almost kitsch. Some of their faces are based on real people. I weave the anecdotal with symbols and the, often bizarre, facts about the Saints' lives. The resulting works are not intended to be religious but explore stories, many of which have become unfamiliar in today's society.

This show is dedicated to Steve, Molly, & Conor. And to Sophie Parkin whose
idea it was.
