Susan Gamble and Michael Wenyon have collaborated since 1983. They are UNESCO Laureates, awarded in 1993, for their work with new technology.

The pair combine differing backgrounds in art and science.

Susan Gamble has degrees in Fine Art, from Goldsmiths’ College, London, and in the History of Science, from Cambridge University, while Michael Wenyon studied Physics at Bristol University and Optics at Imperial College, London.

Their works are in collections such as The Victoria & Albert Museum; the M.I.T. Collection, Boston; the National Portrait Gallery and the National Academies of Science, Washington DC, and have been exhibited internationally, including shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Liverpool, Mito Art Tower, Japan. Their work was last exhibited in London at The Photographers Gallery in 1993.

In this show the artists muse on the photographic practice and organic material: coal and silver.

‘Silver Before Photography’ is a hologram of English silverware manufactured before the invention of photography. The hologram presents the illusion of antique spoons and ladles, resting on a table.

Holography was possibly the last analogue photographic process to use silver salts. Here the twentieth-century medium provides a window onto silver objects from an age before photography.

For this exhibit the artists have selected a nineteenth-century stereo Daguerreotype from the Jonathan Ross collection of a family grouped around a table, to allude to the domestic objects, scenes and processes that continue over time. The artists employ different media ––holograms and daguerreotypes––to reflect on the past and the sentimental lure of objects as they fade into history.

Jack Myntan; Unveiling the Unconscious

Quaker Connection

My work has been influenced and evolved side by side with my faith and spiritual beliefs. Over the years my paintings were either landscapes or figurative, often in a metaphorical setting.  Then a union of both began. It has been inspired increasingly by the Quaker testimonies of Peace, Equality, Truth and Simplicity. They have guided me, to take my leadings in a personal expression through a creative process.

‘Through the act of creativity, I enter a process which delivers something that usually surprises me and also is not consciously designed. In this process, I receive insights and a fulfilment which I only have by entering this activity.’

In recent years my research has been about different faiths and religions, and the journey of the soul. Most of these beliefs include an invisible realm.

This has been my journey and interest for the last 40 years.

I am part of the Quaker Arts Network which was initiated in 2012. The Network has been endeavouring to encompass artists from all over Britain and beyond who are travelling a Quaker pathway.

Anne McNeill-Pulati’s painting has a joyful use of colour that predominantly defines her compositions in which, on further study, a deeper narrative can be found. She prefers the media of oil on canvas or ink and gouache on paper. To convey emotion she emphasizes the facial expression of the figures. The studies for the oil paintings are worked in small sketches, often initially starting with colour rather than form. These sketches are usually collected in small series which she then compiles into artbooks.

Themes meaning

The exhibition ‘Two Worlds’ shows a body of work based on myths and legends about an invisible world. This central narrative is an unseen phenomenon but is also real. As a species we humans have found it supportive to abide by the rules of belief systems found in superstitions and religions. The rules of these systems have been influenced by the need to survive. In contrast, the visible world provides its own evidence to their value and purpose but interpretations feed opinion and outcomes. Her work includes notions of self, what is inside of ourselves, our fears, desires, phobias and strengths.

Past influences in artmaking

The narratives are inspired and influenced by artists, poets and writers both past and present; artists such as William Blake, Hieronymus Bosch, PP Rubens, Velazquez, Botticelli, Goya, Chagall and Picasso, who have been masters of painting as a form of expression. Biblical and religious texts are also rich and plentiful in this genre which have been a source of inspiration.

Design of imagery

Anne McNeill-Pulati’s creatures are often part real and part mythological. The figures are lacking in ethnicity, rather trying to show the nature of the storyline.  A lack of perspective and a multi-viewpoint approach to her compositions allow for her imagination to flow more freely.  The narratives come from the many cultural and ethnic belief systems.

Jessica loves to be out in the parks and gardens of London capturing the changing light of the seasons.  Winter clouds in blue skies and dark green August trees are her inspiration.   Jam jars of blossoms and jugs of Delphiniums are her studio companions.

She and Daniel share their West London home studio.  A day in the painting life might include a plein air painting trip to a London park, buying flowers from local florists, painting regular local sitters and comparing notes on each other’s still life set-ups.

Ioana Pioaru is a U.K.-based Romanian artist working with a variety of media ranging from VR artmaking and holography to traditional drawing and printmaking.

Ioana received her BA (2008) and MA (2010) from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, where she studied fine art drawing. In 2021 she received her PhD from the University of Chester, under the auspices of Glyndwr University, for her research into the concept of artistic maximalism.

In Romania she is represented by AnnArt Gallery.

The artworks presented in this exhibition, created between 2016 and 2020, accompany Ioana Pioaru’s doctoral thesis – ‘A practice-based approach to defining maximalism’.

Pioaru’s art embodies a twofold understanding of Maximalism: on the one hand, a mode of artistic expression intrinsic to the artwork, characterised by an engagement with the limits of the medium; on the other hand, a quality of the process of artmaking, a strategy which the artist employs to decentralise the artistic self.

The individual artworks explore maximalism through a variety of new and traditional media: holography, virtual reality artmaking, 3D printing, printmaking and drawing. The exhibition reveals maximalism as the artist’s multidimensional approach to artmaking and reflects her engagement in a continual process of becoming, as a method to access new tools for artistic expression.

Eleanor Ekserdjian is a multidisciplinary artist, creating installations which combine drawing, film and performance.

Her most recent body of work responds through the act of drawing to the highly distinctive visual language and emotive power of silent film. By projecting the film onto paper and drawing from and over it, her physical and emotional responses are made visible through rapid mark-making. Through gesture and line she traces the visions, fears and terror of the film’s protagonists. These drawings become lyrical landscapes of anxiety, exploring her emotional response to film and exploiting the unique ability of the medium of drawing to act as a spontaneous record of thought.

Drawing here becomes thinking in action. The performative act of drawing and the physical drawing itself seek to reconcile the physicality of gesture with psychological interiority, between what is thought and what is seen.

 

Eleanor graduated from The University of Edinburgh with an MA Fine Art (Hons) in 2019. She has since worked as a practicing artist and freelance journalist, writing for publications such as The Article and Standpoint magazine on the subject of film.

Shelly Bancroft had a peripatetic childhood, full of adventure, travelling in Africa and also to Argentina before settling in Oxford at the age of eleven. Living in remote areas of the Tropics introduced her to the magic of different worlds and cultures.

Since her MA at the Royal College of Art Film School, she has worked in the film industry as a Creative Affairs Executive (for a Hollywood studio) and in Film Acquisitions, Development and as a Creative Producer.

Realising that she missed the tactile process of making an image, she has returned to figurative art (in parallel with her work in film). Her interest in light and form – not only through film making, but observational drawing, etching and watercolour, has evolved into an enchantment with the line and contour of relief sculpture and most recently, the translucency of porcelain and casting in glass.

Inspired by ancient Asian, Eastern and Greek iconography, her work explores themes around physical intimacy, vitality and memory – representations of touch and being, whether they be images of sanctity or passion. She has been using a haptic technique of indentation on small plaques, to capture moments of presence and form, like footprints in the sand. Making positive versions of the indented work has been a process around conjuring an enshrinement of touch in a transitory world. She is now casting her sculpture in glass, working with glass artists Lolita Diot-Parslow and Monette Larson. She is also starting to explore evocations of physical and spiritual energy with porcelain and light.

In 2019 she presented her porcelain relief sculpture of The Resurrection to St.Gabriel’s Anglo-Catholic Church, Pimlico, in the presence of the Bishop of London. She has now completed a new commission depicting Adam and Eve for St. Gabriel’s.

She is also interested in representational figurative work and has had a number of portrait commissions, both faces and nudes; drawings, paintings and relief sculpture.
